What You'll Do
Partnering closely with the Associate Director, Software Engineering and stakeholders across Product, Architecture, Security, Platform Engineering and Delivery teams, you will be responsible for:
- Building and leading high-performing engineering teams while fostering a culture of innovation, continuous improvement, and engineering excellence.
- Driving the adoption of modern software engineering practices including DevSecOps, CI/CD, automated testing, observability, and site reliability engineering.
- Providing technical leadership across software architecture, solution design, engineering standards, security, scalability, reliability, and maintainability.
- Establishing and tracking engineering health metrics including deployment frequency, lead time, change failure rate, system reliability, operational performance, and technical debt.
- Partnering with architects and technology leaders to govern technical designs and ensure alignment with enterprise architecture principles.
- Developing workforce planning, recruitment, onboarding, and retention strategies to build engineering capability and future talent pipelines.
- Coaching, mentoring, and developing engineers, supporting career growth, succession planning, and capability uplift across the chapter.
- Managing performance, engagement, and delivery outcomes across multiple squads in a fast-paced Agile environment.
- Identifying and managing technical, operational, and delivery risks while balancing business priorities with long-term engineering sustainability.
- Promoting Optus values and fostering an inclusive, collaborative, and high-performing engineering culture.
What You'll Bring
- 10+ years of software engineering experience, with at least 3-5 years leading engineering teams.
- Proven experience delivering web, cloud-native, and integration solutions within complex enterprise environments.
- Deep understanding of software engineering principles, architecture patterns, and modern development practices.
- Strong experience with DevOps, CI/CD pipelines, Infrastructure as Code, automated testing, and cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or GCP.
- Strong understanding of system reliability, observability, performance optimisation, and operational support models.
- Experience establishing engineering standards, governance frameworks, and quality practices across multiple teams.
- Strong stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence outcomes across diverse technical and business teams.
- Proven people leadership capability, including coaching, mentoring, performance management, and leading through organisational change.
- A degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, Mathematics, Statistics, or a related discipline, or equivalent industry experience.
