Senior Tools and Systems Engineer

This role is responsible for deploying, managing, and assuring tooling systems including those responsible for network management and reporting services across the Optus Federal Government Space.

Reporting to the Tools Architect, The Tooling, Systems and Networks specialist will work in close collaboration with other Optus Personnel; the Tools Architect, Network Operational Architects, and the Technical Delivery Manager as part of a broader engineering team or as required, in conjunction with delivery teams such as the GTAC and Network Services Delivery capabilities to deliver outcomes to the customer.

Expertise in Networks, Tooling, Security, and Systems—including technologies like Routing, Switching, Security, Servers, Cloud, Virtualization, and Monitoring—is vital, along with the ability to perform complex tasks efficiently.

The objective of this role is to provide technical expertise, implementation, and operation of complex services being offered to Optus Federal Government Clients in one or more technology domains. This includes ensuring the technologies are fit for purpose and satisfy operation requirements of both the client and the Optus Federal Government Operations. The role will be a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in the technology domain being implemented and the Client environment and is the highest level of technical expertise within the Technical Operations team and will be a key point of escalation for complex technical issues across the toolsets, as well as peer escalation for the Tools team and Optus Operations teams.


The day to day

  • Contribute to customer engagement and maintain strong working relationships with customer technical teams.
  • Collection and analysis of customer feedback and network data, contributing to customer facing reports, presentations, and roadmaps.
  • Providing technical input to the Tools Architect and Service Architect, ensuring accurate information is used to maintain Optus’ trusted advisor status with the customer.
  • Provide input into the design of end-to-end tool related service elements based on client and support requirements.
  • Contribute to the development of solutions with the primary objective of building a viable and supportable tools environment, including requirements such as resourcing, security, patching, support, and service management.
  • Provide technical advice to technical leads on large/complex projects where tooling is involved, escalating technical delivery issues to the tools architect and project team where required.


Your skills to pay the bills

  • Australian Citizenship and capable of maintaining an NV1 security clearance.
  • Minimum 3-5 years’ technical experience working within a large-scale enterprise level Network or systems’ toolset environment.
  • Experience in technical toolset solutions and providing technical advice and expertise to support, identify and maintain architectural integrity of a system.
  • Experience in services and products with support processes bedded in tools, and providing advice on service management for these products.
  • Expertise in leading the delivery of diverse technical services.
  • Key customer relationship experiences with accountability for technical outcomes.
  • Ideally you have exposure to the following technologies: Data Centre Networks, Hosting and Midrange, security incident management, and logging systems and analytics.
  • CISCO / CCNP or similar certification is highly desirable however not essential.
