Business Data Modeler

The role of Business Data Modeler is to drive consistent and robust business definitions and rules of different types of data (reference, master and transactional) across Optus data platforms and support the business data architect in maintaining the Enterprise data model and mapping multiple data sets across the lifecycle of data management processes across platforms.

The role

  • Detailing data architecture guidelines, policies and modeling standards
  • Defines sourcing and system integration requirements for downstream consumers
  • Works with Analytics Data Steward(s) and Business Data Owners to identify data elements needed to address downstream data requests
  • Detail enterprise data model, identify domains, and prioritize critical data elements
  • Contribute to development of Enterprise Data Catalog and business glossary
  • Ensures data element lineage and other business and technical metadata is documented in the repository
  • Drive compliance of projects to established data architecture standards and metrics
  • Collaborate with Analytics Data Steward to enforce data policies, rules, and standards across squads
  • Advise on potential resolutions for data issues and support prioritization of large improvement opportunities

About you

Preferred skills and experience include:

  • Bachelor’s degree in maths, statistics, computer science, information management, finance or economics
  • 8+ years of experience in lead data modeler related positions within the Telco data domain (across OSS and BSS systems)
  • Able to understand business requirements and clearly define supporting data requirements (preferably in Telco data domains)
  • Conceptual, logical and physical data modelling and mapping across Telco subject areas (e.g. Billing, CRM, Usage, Customer, Interactions, Events etc)
  • Experience across Data management lifecycle (ingestion, profiling, transformation, integration, summarization, publication and archiving of data sets to support multiple use cases)
  • Experience with data modelling, profiling, metadata and Enterprise Data Catalog tools
  • Knowledge of Data systems and platforms (e.g. Master Data Management, document management, data warehouses, BI tooling, visualisation, business data lakes, integration etc)
  • Agile Ways of Working skills (preferably in the capacity of an Agile squad/scrum member)
  • Effective communicator – able to present content and gain buy-in from stakeholders
  • Able to balance business needs with IT capabilities


You would be a self-starter with the ability to work independently and multitask several different activities across critical deadlines in a high-pressure environment.
