Every day, millions of Australians connect, work, stream, and stay in touch on the Optus network. When it works seamlessly, it's easy to take for granted. But behind it is a team making thousands of decisions every day - decisions that keep people, businesses and communities connected.

The Internet Network Engineering team is responsible for the architecture and engineering of Optus's Internet network, supporting mobile, fixed and business services across national and international routing infrastructure.

This senior engineering role provides technical leadership for the design, testing, implementation and lifecycle evolution of Optus's Internet routing infrastructure. Acting as the team's subject matter expert, the role translates architecture and service requirements into detailed, operationally supportable network solutions, while providing design assurance, mentoring engineers and managing technical risks across projects, operations and vendor engagements.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead the detailed design and evolution of Optus' Internet routing infrastructure, translating architecture and service requirements into scalable, resilient and operationally supportable network solutions.
  • Act as the technical lead and subject matter expert for complex routing initiatives, topology design, platform evolution and multivendor engineering challenges.
  • Develop high-quality engineering deliverables including detailed designs, configurations, test plans, implementation and rollback procedures, and operational handover documentation.
  • Lead lab testing, solution validation and production implementation, resolving issues and assuring solutions before and through deployment.
  • Drive network automation, telemetry and observability, improving the repeatability, visibility and operational effectiveness of network engineering.
  • Provide technical assurance and leadership across the engineering lifecycle, working with architecture, operations, projects and vendors, while mentoring engineers and communicating technical risks and recommendations to stakeholders.

What You’ll Bring

  • Degree in Telecommunications Engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent relevant industry experience.
  • 7+ years' experience in service-provider, hyperscale or large-scale Internet network engineering, including senior IP or Internet network design responsibilities.
  • Deep practical expertise in Internet routing, including BGP/MP-BGP, routing policy, OSPF, IS-IS, MPLS, Segment Routing and SRv6, traffic engineering and network resilience.
  • Hands-on experience with Cisco and/or Juniper service-provider routing platforms, including design, configuration, testing and troubleshooting.
  • Experience designing scalable and resilient Internet networks, including peering, transit, content connectivity, capacity planning and routing security.
  • Experience with network automation, telemetry and observability, including technologies such as Python, Ansible, streaming telemetry and NetFlow/IPFIX.
  • Strong capability in translating architecture and service requirements into detailed designs, test plans, implementation procedures and operational handover.
  • Strong engineering judgement, technical communication and stakeholder engagement skills. Relevant Cisco or Juniper certifications and knowledge of DDoS, DNS/Anycast, SDN and optical transport technologies are advantageous.
