The Project Engineer is responsible for designing, delivering, maintaining, and relocating Optus telecommunications infrastructure, including managing capital projects that expand Core and Customer Access Networks while coordinating asset relocations and cost recovery from external utilities. Working closely with the Fibre Manager and engineering teams, the role ensures engineering projects are completed on time, within budget, and to quality standards, while supporting a reliable network and delivering a positive customer experience.

 

Your day to day will consist of

  • Manage end-to-end telecommunications infrastructure projects, including network build, maintenance, and relocation activities across EXCH, FAN, RAN, HUBS, GSM, and CAN environments.
  • Deliver key network expansion projects (e.g., LTE) on time, meeting project milestones, schedules, KPIs, quality standards, and budget requirements.
  • Coordinate and manage external contractors, ensuring compliance with Optus WHS/OH&S policies, environmental standards, and quality requirements.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with internal teams, customers, building managers, utilities, councils, and government authorities to support project delivery and stakeholder outcomes.
  • Monitor project finances, manage costs, deliver projects within budget, and work with the legal team to recover relocation costs from third-party utilities where applicable.
  • Conduct quality inspections and audits of contractor works, ensuring adherence to company procedures, service level agreements, and performance standards.
  • Support team capability development by mentoring staff, assisting with skills development initiatives, and contributing to a reliable, efficient, and customer-focused network delivery function.

 

What makes you perfect for the role

  • Tertiary, Trade Certificate, or TAFE qualification in Telecommunications, Electrical, Civil, or a related discipline is desired.
  • Minimum 3 years’ recent telecommunications experience, with strong knowledge of fibre optic networks, infrastructure design, construction, deployment, and maintenance activities.
  • Proven project management and contractor management experience within a commercial telecommunications environment, including budget and cost control.
  • Strong understanding of telecommunications network architecture, service delivery methods, and internal/external infrastructure deployment processes.
  • Excellent communication, stakeholder engagement, negotiation, organisational, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively under pressure and achieve results.
  • Proficient in basic computer applications and online tools, including Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and email systems.
  • Current driver's licence, good physical fitness, ability to work in restricted spaces or at heights, and desirable experience in fibre splicing and supervisory/team leadership roles
