Reporting to the Director, Detection and Response, the Senior Detection and Response Engineer  is a critical position that will enable Optus to realise its vision of becoming Australia’s most loved everyday brand with lasting customer relationships.

 

What You’ll Do

This key role is responsible for Delivery of the DART Cyber Security transformation and strategy, acting as the representative to Cyber Defence LT members for on-going engagement on the organisational threat profile. You’ll be responsible for:

  • The evolution of the Optus detection and response (DART) capability, including threat hunting, purple teaming, detection engineering, cyber incident management, threat intelligence and on-going development of the supporting people, process, and technologies;
  • Helping to shape the Optus Cyber Threat detection capability, integrating tightly with the broader Cyber defence function;
  • Driving the continued evolution of the Defensive Cyber Security capability, including participating in planning and development of supporting business cases for further investment;
  • Managing Cyber Security incident response activities, including developing strategies to contain and rapidly resolve incidents;
  • Instilling and fostering a culture of excellence, integrity, and professionalism; one that works toward the highest standards in cyber security.

 

This role collaborates and respectively challenges the formation and execution of the business-critical strategic cyber defence initiatives, shows strong technical stewardship, influencing where necessary to ensure mutually beneficial outcomes. It is also expected that this role will ensure:

  • Independent assurance and recommendations are provided;
  • High degree of quality and level of comfort that strategic initiatives will be technically executed as intended, without bias; and
  • Willingness to challenge stakeholders on how best to meet these expectations.

 

This is a fast-paced place with lots happening and we’re looking for someone comfortable operating independently, influencing the right outcomes for the team, the organisation, and our customers.

What You’ll Bring

  • Tertiary qualifications computer science, information systems, engineering, cyber security or other relevant disciplines, especially Threat hunting, incident management, detection engineering and CI/CD
  • 5+ years of relevant experience in cyber security risk management, transformation and/or strategic roles.
  • Extensive experience managing complex, projects, and dealing with ambiguous situations.
  • Deep understanding of malware families/evolution, indicators (pyramid of pain), TTPs (tools, tactics/techniques, procedures) used by cyber adversaries and how to apply effectively to help inform key stakeholders of attack chains & exploits while also building threat assessments for organizational cyber adversaries and their probability/intent to attack.
  • Expert knowledge of cyber threat landscape - (state / geopolitical, cybercrime, hacktivism, insider risks, etc.).
  • Proven subject matter expertise in relevant areas, including threat intelligence, detection engineering, incident management, and forensics.
  • Strong understanding of python, automation and engineering deployment pipelines.
  • Advanced problem solving and conflict management skills.
  • Understanding of both technical project framing and execution, plus people change management necessities.
  • Ability to work autonomously and proactively make decisions.
  • Technical coaching ability with a track record in delivering strong engineering focused solutions.
  • A self-starter with an ability to adapt to a dynamic, ever-changing and ambiguous environment.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication and influencing skills with the ability to work with stakeholders across different functions, with colleagues at all levels, and with partners.
  • Demonstrated ability work well under pressure, meet deadlines and adapt easily to frequent change.
