The Senior Technical Specialist, Infrastructure Engineering position forms Access Networks Infrastructure National SME and document owner on all matters relating to equipment install commission & integration standards and services.  The role manages, on a national basis, the setting of Optus’ build Infrastructure & installation standards, site install quality standards and the writing of Optus’ the supporting Standards documents. 

 

Supporting the strategy, engineering, and enablement of mobile access site infrastructure, with a strong focus on radio technologies (4G, 5G, and beyond) and network resiliency. The role requires deep expertise across access network technologies, power systems, and industry best practices to deliver scalable resiliency improvements, simplify operations, and enhance service delivery.

 

This is a varied and demanding role and has a very large influence on the actual build, install & commission works and practices performed at sites by Optus’ Suppliers and resulting build standards in the Optus Mobile Network

 

The day to day

  • Creation and maintenance of detailed quality and standards documentation, guidelines and bulletins for all aspects of site quality and site standard subject matters, to be used in the planning, design and deployment of Optus’ mobile network. 
  • Evaluation of new mobile network products & solutions roadmaps and influence vendor development of solutions to meet Optus requirements
  • Undertake trials at sites of new products or new build innovations such as modern power systems, telemetry/observability and resilience initiatives.
  • Develop and Innovate new installation practices, build products, systems and databases that support Optus Mobile Deployment Programs
  • Support the design and documentation of end-to-end solutions for specific projects and initiatives including training and operational considerations
  • Ensuring solutions conform to Australian Standards and the strategic domain roadmap and align to requirements set by the Solution architects and Enterprise architects
  • Provide support and direction to Optus Deployment staff, Optus Service Assurance Staff, Optus’ Network Operations Centre staff, Optus’ Supplier Partners and any third-party equipment or services suppliers
  • Regular attend any nominated forums with the key Services Supplier, providing collaborative input and prompt resolution of raised matters
  • Act as the Quality and Standards prime with Optus Product and Services Suppliers, eJV Design Working Group with TPG, the eJV Office, Optus and Optus Operations
  • Carrying out site inspections to audit quality of works and I&C practices to ensure Optus’ standards are practical and achievable, and develop or update new standards as a result of these investigations
  • Participation in Quality and Security Audits as required including root cause analysis of I&C related problems at sites
  • Liaising with field operations and maintenance staff on I&C matters
  • Lifecycle management of legacy networks decom and modernisation of site support infrastructure

 

 

Why you are our next Senior Technical Specialist

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical or Communications Engineering or other relevant tertiary qualification or demonstration of significant subject matter expertise gained through at least 10 years experience gained in a relevant related role.
  • Minimum 7 years experience working on major Telecommunications projects with focus on Infrastructure installation standards and quality
  • Demonstrable understanding of 4G/5G mobile technologies, transmission equipment and power systems from a site build, installation and quality perspective
  • Demonstrated experience in Mobile RAN site solutions & lifecycle management of DC and AC power systems for Telecom, Battery technologies, Generator and Hybrid power systems, Advanced site controllers, Telemetry frameworks, Secure remote management.
  • Demonstrable understanding of mobile network deployment processes and practices either undertaking or managing site build and/or IC works
  • Demonstrable experience in acting as a technical subject matter expert, providing support and direction to both internal stakeholders and external partners
  • Awareness of EME and ACMA regulatory requirements and Optus processes.
  • Demonstrate a good understanding the various network elements, network configurations and associated data within the Optus network
  • Demonstrated capacity to take ownership of problem resolution and timely delivery
  • Effective communication and co-ordination with other groups to ensure on time delivery of services
  • Proven ability to work autonomously within broad guidelines, as an individual and as part of a team
  • Superior communication skills both written and verbal
  • Proven ability to design suitable test cases to capture data for analysis and propose workarounds
  • Demonstrated problem solving and engineering skills and decisiveness
  • Technical knowledge of programming languages, IT infrastructure and database concepts, coding and writing of macros
  • Proven ability to work across complex, multi‑stakeholder environments and communicate technical concepts clearly to diverse audiences.
