Optus is an Australian telecommunications company, delivering more than 11 million services to our customers every day across mobile, broadband and digital solutions.

IP Platform Engineering is responsible for end-to-end management of IP core platforms, including lifecycle planning, cybersecurity compliance, performance monitoring, and addressing business demand across all service streams (Fixed, Mobile, and Enterprise). The role requires acting as a domain lead, independently managing platform engineering, delivering business outcomes, and ensuring successful production deployment through strong technical expertise in telco networks. As a senior position, it also involves leadership, stakeholder collaboration, and vendor management, with an expectation to operate with minimal supervision and develop subject matter expertise.

Your day to day will consist of

  • Plan and design end-to-end IP core network builds, expansions, and upgrades, including cost–benefit analysis to determine optimal solutions.
  • Develop and execute implementation plans, issue engineering orders, and proactively manage capacity, upgrades, and consolidation of legacy platforms.
  • Lead project meetings, guide stakeholders on objectives and direction, and support sourcing and related initiatives.
  • Maintain strong stakeholder relationships to resolve issues early, demonstrate customer experience improvements, and deliver regular project reporting while mitigating network risks.
  • Prepare AOP investment plans, contribute to technology reviews, and provide strategic recommendations for IP network solutions and direction.
  • Support team and organisational capability by mentoring engineers, creating training materials, and effectively communicating complex technical solutions to both technical and non-technical audiences.

What makes you perfect for the role

  • Extensive industry experience, including 15+ years in telecommunications and 10+ years in IP networking roles.
  • Strong knowledge of IP networking technologies such as TCP/IP, routing & switching, MPLS, traffic engineering, EoMPLS, and modern data centre technologies (e.g., VXLAN, Cisco ACI, VPC).
  • Proven experience in network planning, router configuration, and working within telecommunications provider environments, with understanding of platforms, service design, and operations.
  • Solid project, budget, and platform management skills, along with good documentation capability and ability to engage with middle and senior management.
  • Effective communication, stakeholder engagement, and presentation skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
