The National Fibre Technical Specialist is responsible for developing and implementing Optus’ national fibre network plans to support long-term growth across Consumer, Enterprise, and Mobile services. Reporting to the Associate Director, National Fibre, this role focuses on designing cost-effective fibre solutions, managing network capacity, and ensuring alignment with business objectives and technology roadmaps.
Key responsibilities include leading capital planning for major fibre programs, supporting enterprise bids and special projects with engineering designs and cost estimates, and driving successful implementation of fibre planning projects into builds. The role also involves collaborating with deployment teams to resolve operational challenges and ensure timely, efficient delivery of fibre infrastructure projects.
What You’ll Do
- Develop long-term fibre network plans to expand national infrastructure and support growth across Consumer, Enterprise, and Mobile services.
- Supervise and manage fibre network capacity to ensure performance meets KPIs and future service requirements.
- Plan and design fibre routes, cable sizing, splice locations, technology selection, and build timing for efficient solutions.
- Conduct cost-benefit analyses for upgrades or rearrangements and initiate builds through planning notices.
- Resolve fibre design conflicts and identify integration opportunities across underground and aerial networks in alignment with broader transport strategies.
- Work with internal engineering teams, support enterprise bids with designs and cost estimates, manage fibre planning projects, and provide training and guidance to contractors.
What You Bring
- Strong knowledge of fibre architecture, route planning, cable sizing, splice placement, and technology selection.
- Ability to manage fibre network capacity and maintain service resiliency to meet KPIs and future demand.
- Skilled in cost-benefit evaluations and resolving complex fibre design conflicts with scalable, cost-effective solutions.
- Capability to identify integration opportunities across underground/aerial fibre networks and align with broader transport strategies.
- Proven track record and ability to collaborate effectively with internal teams and external partners, including customers, suppliers, and regulatory bodies.
- Strong documentation skills, ability to communicate technical concepts clearly, and experience mentoring contractors to uphold quality standards.
- Strong knowledge and experienced in using GIS tools for physical and logical network inventory management and record keeping
- Experienced in intercity route, longhaul and metro city route planning and fibre architecture.
- Understanding of DWDM and Carrier Ethernet network is a plus
- Experienced and ability to work with internal engineering team, lead planning activities, presenting short term and long term fibre strategy is a must
- Ability to support and prescribe planning and design guidelines in reference to Standards
