The Technical Specialist collaborates closely with managed service providers, vendors, and internal engineering teams to implement network strategies and enhance operational effectiveness. This role is a feeder to the Senior Technical Specialist, and as such, provides development opportunities in stakeholder engagement, complex fault resolution, and leadership capability.

 

Operating within a Tier 2 Network Operations team, the specialist provides 24x7 support on a rotating roster based in Network Operations Centre in Macquarie Park. In addition to resolving complex technical issues and mentoring less experienced team members, the role requires strong collaboration with managed service providers, equipment vendors, and internal engineering teams to support the implementation of network strategies, solution onboarding, and ongoing operational improvements. 

 

  • Location: 100% on site at Macquarie Park, Sydney 
  • Work Pattern: Rotating shift roster, including morning, afternoon and night 

 

 

What You’ll Do

 

  • Execute technical operational processes and provide technical support to maintain network availability.
  • Respond to and assist in resolving incidents escalated by Managed Services where issues are not immediately resolvable.
  • Support Problem Management by contributing to root cause analysis and corrective action recommendations.
  • Manage and respond to escalations from Service Assurance Managers on critical incidents under guidance.
  • Assist with planning and execution of network changes, expansions, and upgrades.
  • Recommend improvements to network design to enhance performance and reliability.
  • Ensure all planned changes meet Optus’ quality and performance policies.
  • Support continuous improvement activities alongside Engineering, Vendors, and Managed Services.
  • Contribute to tools strategy and automation initiatives by providing operational insights.
  • Participate in alarm filtering, correlation analysis, and service assurance automation efforts.
  • Provide operational input into weekly/monthly KPI and SLA reporting processes.
  • Act as a point of knowledge for peers and contribute to team knowledge sharing and training initiatives.

 

 

What You Bring

 

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Telecommunications or Science discipline.
  • Minimum 5 years’ hands-on experience in multi-vendor Metro/Long-Haul DWDM networks.
  • Solid understanding of DWDM technologies (ROADM, TOADM, Optical Amplifiers), SyncE and PTP protocols.
  • Experience supporting technology and vendors in a fast-paced operational environment.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to investigate and escalate effectively.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills across technical and non-technical stakeholders.
