It starts with YES!

Optus is an Australian telecommunications company, delivering more than 11 million services to our customers every day across mobile, broadband, and digital solutions.

The Senior Corporate Counsel (SCC) operates as a trusted legal advisor within a complex, dynamic and heavily regulated telecommunications environment. They provide commercially focused legal support to Optus’ Mid‑Market and Enterprise Business units, guiding these areas with expert advice on the legal issues affecting their operations. The role regularly leads significant, high‑risk projects, simplifies complex legal concepts for stakeholders, and influences business teams to make legally sound decisions.

The SCC also drives continuous improvement in legal processes, supports governance structures, and helps develop legal capability across the team. They may mentor or manage lawyers, contribute to broader legal team operations, and assist in managing external legal providers. By enhancing contracting standards, supporting customer and vendor negotiations, and proactively identifying legal and regulatory risks, the SCC plays a key role in improving customer experience, protecting the business, and reducing legal exposure.

What you'll be doing:

  • Provide clear, commercially focused legal advice, supervising internal and external legal work and helping the business understand its legal obligations.
  • Identify, assess and mitigate legal and corporate risks by monitoring legislation, simplifying complex issues and protecting Optus’ IP, revenue and customer base.
  • Support informed decision‑making by balancing legal requirements with commercial objectives and keeping business units updated on emerging regulatory developments.
  • Lead and negotiate major commercial transactions to ensure contracts protect Optus’ interests and enable future business opportunities.
  • Strengthen commercial outcomes by educating stakeholders, improving contracting processes and coordinating regional agreements with affiliates.
  • Resolve non‑material disputes and manage related litigation to minimise financial, operational and legal risk.
  • Demonstrate strong people leadership by engaging stakeholders, building capability, leading change and driving high‑performance outcomes.

What makes you perfect for the role?

  • Admitted solicitor with 7+ years’ post‑admission experience, including strong capability across commercial law and negotiations with both customers and suppliers.
  •  Expertise in competition, privacy and IP law. Experience in telecommunications law highly desirable.
  • Highly developed legal, drafting and negotiation skills, with the ability to provide commercially focused advice and liaise effectively with senior executives.
  • Technology contracting and B2B contracting experience preferred.
  • Strong communication and project management skills, with proficiency in written and verbal communication and ability to simplify complex legal issues for business decision-making.
  • Proven interpersonal and behavioural strengths, including being approachable, building trusted relationships, resolving conflict and influencing stakeholders at all levels.
  • Leadership capability and strong work discipline, including managing and coaching others, working autonomously or in teams, handling competing priorities, and demonstrating proactive, high‑performance behaviour.
