Date: 25 May 2026
Location: Sydney, Australia
Company: Singtel Group
Optus is an Australian telecommunications company, delivering more than 11 million services to our customers every day across mobile, broadband and digital solutions.
As our Senior Corporate Counsel for Commercial/ Retail, you'll sit at the heart of Optus' Consumer legal team, reporting to the Assistant General Counsel, Commercial and Data. This is a high-impact role where you'll be the go-to legal partner for Optus' retail channels including Optus-owned stores, retail partners, mass market retailers and contact centres providing trusted, commercially focused advice that protects customers and drives the business forward.
Operating in one of Australia's most competitive and heavily regulated industries, you'll bring strategic thinking and pragmatic solutions to complex legal challenges across sales practices, channel governance, compliance, privacy and consumer law and play a key role in shaping Optus' Consumer transformation agenda.
Your role will require you to:
- Provide strategic legal advice across Optus' retail channels, including Optus-owned stores, retail partners, mass market retailers and contact centres — guiding the business on a broad range of issues
- Draft, review and negotiate commercial contracts, with a focus on retail distribution of Optus products and services, as well as arrangements with various streaming services accessible via Optus’ subscription management platform, balancing the interests of Optus, the retailer and the consumer
- Identify and manage legal and conduct risks arising in consumer sales environments, partnering with Compliance on uplift priorities including customer outcomes, complaint remediation and channel governance frameworks
- Advise senior stakeholder and leadership on material legal matters, translating complex regulatory and commercial issues into clear, practical recommendations
- Monitor legislative and regulatory developments across telecommunications, privacy, competition and consumer law, proactively implementing changes to ensure Optus' policies, procedures and stakeholder frameworks remain compliant
What makes you perfect for the role?
- Admitted solicitor in Australia with 10+ years PQE, ideally spanning both private practice at a leading law firm and in-house giving you the commercial sharpness to move fast and the strategic lens to see the bigger picture.
- Deep expertise in commercial and transactional law, with a strong track record drafting, reviewing and negotiating retail distribution agreements
- Hands-on experience in telecommunications and/ or FMCG, with knowledge of Australia's regulatory landscape, including the Telecommunications Act, Telecommunications Consumer Protection Code, competition law and Privacy Act, with the ability to translate complex legislation into practical, business-ready guidance.
- A natural relationship builder, you're known for being the trusted legal partner that business teams actively seek out whilst being equally comfortable advising frontline retail operations and presenting to senior leaders.
- Superior written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to juggle competing priorities without dropping the ball in a fast-paced, heavily regulated environment
