Company: Singtel Group

Optus Network Engineering keeps Australia connected. We own the design, planning, delivery, and operation of one of Australia's largest and most critical telecommunications networks. In other words, we're the people who keep 11 million customers online every day. We support the IP infrastructure that powers mobile, broadband, and digital services across the nation - and we're looking for talented software engineers who want to build the future of a network indistinguishable from perfect.

The IP Automation & Tooling team develops and operates automation, observability, and data platforms spanning IP Core, Edge, Aggregation, and Optical domains. We own the end-to-end roadmap for transforming our IP network into an intelligent, self-healing platform that operates at national scale.

You'll join a diverse team of network engineers, software developers, and data scientists tackling some of telco's most challenging problems - building one of Australia's most advanced network automation platforms. You'll collaborate across Optus and with partners to deliver the highest standards for network reliability, performance, and operational efficiency. And you'll experience a culture that welcomes experimentation, bold ideas, and gives you the autonomy to own them to completion.

What You'll Do

  • Lead the design and architecture of scalable automation and observability platforms that operate at national telco scale.
  • Drive technical initiatives from concept to production, making architectural decisions that balance performance, reliability, and maintainability.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to team members through code reviews, pair programming, and knowledge sharing.
  • Collaborate with network engineers, product teams, and cross-functional stakeholders to translate operational needs into technical solutions.
  • Solve complex technical problems across the full stack, from streaming data pipelines to AI-powered automation systems.
  • Establish engineering best practices, coding standards, and introduce new technologies that improve team efficiency.
  • Participate in on-call rotation and incident response for critical production systems.

What You Bring

  • Tertiary qualifications in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 4+ years building and shipping production software, preferably in Golan and Python in complex technology environments.
  • Hands on experience with Linux environments, event streaming platforms (Kafka or similar) and real-time data processing is desirable.
  • Experience with observability tools (Grafana, Victoria Metrics, Elasticsearch), CI/CD practices, databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB), and RESTful APIs; familiarity with GraphQL or gRPC a plus.
  • Exposure to AI/ML frameworks (LangChain, PyTorch) or workflow orchestration tools (N8N, Temporal) highly valued.
  • Strong communication skills with ability to explain technical concepts to diverse audiences.

The good stuff…

  • Vibrant and collaborative office campus that includes cafes, convenience store, chill out zones, GP, post office, gym and on-site childcare centre.
  • Competitive leave policies, including additional 'Connected’ days to focus on culture, family, health, community, or whatever’s important to you.
  • We support growing families with inclusive, carer-neutral paid Parental Leave of up to 16 weeks.
  • Direct your own development and build future-ready skills with Optus U’s industry-focused micro-credentials, developed with La Trobe and Macquarie Universities.
