The Senior Sustainability Advisor plays a key role within Optus’ Group Sustainability team, driving environmental and social sustainability initiatives that support Optus’ long-term growth while shaping positive change for the community, our customers, our people and environment. Reporting to the Senior Director, Group Sustainability – Optus, with a dotted line to the Senior Manager, Environment, this role focuses on advancing Optus’ Climate Action and Decarbonisation Strategy, Circular Economy, and Human Rights commitments. The role contributes to continuous improvement by embedding sustainability into organisational operations and processes and ensuring good governance practices, meeting sustainability related regulatory reporting requirements, and contributing to general sustainability reporting.
Additionally, the role leads Optus' e-waste program (Mobile Muster), and sustainable packaging initiatives, while also coordinating broader ESG projects. Key responsibilities include supporting the development of the Modern Slavery Statement, Sustainability Report, APCO reporting, Scope 3 emissions reporting, and other sustainability-related commitments. Through collaboration across the business, this role ensures that sustainability remains a core priority within Optus’ operations and strategic decision-making.
The day to day
- Develop, manage, and improve environmental regulatory reporting, ensuring alignment with standards such as GRI, SASB, ISSB, and GHG protocols. Maintain accurate sustainability data and manage audits within required timeframes.
- Collaborate to help implement environmental strategies, policies, and governance frameworks, supporting Optus’ Climate Action, Circular Economy, and Modern Slavery initiatives.
- Build partnerships with internal teams, industry bodies (e.g., AMTA, APCO), suppliers, and regulators to drive Optus’ sustainability goals.
- Support Optus’ SBT-aligned emissions reduction strategy, and engage with suppliers on decarbonisation initiatives.
- Lead sustainable packaging, MobileMuster, and waste reduction programs, ensuring compliance with APCO reporting and Optus’ waste diversion targets.
- Develop sustainability awareness campaigns, team training, and ensure momentum of national working groups to embed environmental initiatives across Optus.
- Support ethical sourcing, Modern Slavery reporting, and supplier sustainability assessments to ensure compliance and responsible procurement.
Why you are our next Senior Sustainability Advisor
- Hands on experience in environmental management, including sustainability reporting and regulatory compliance, underpinned by professional qualifications.
- A minimum of 3 years in a private organisation of similar size to Optus, with accountability for environmental management.
- Strong knowledge and understanding of environmental strategies, climate action (Scope 1, 2 & 3), circular economy, and sustainability reporting frameworks (e.g., NGERS, APCO, AASB S1/S2, SBTi, GRI, Modern Slavery).
- Knowledge and experience in implementing modern slavery action plans.
- Strong communication, business partner management, and execution skills, with attention to detail and systems thinking.
