The Vice President (VP) of Software Engineering is accountable for the strategic direction, operational excellence, and continuous improvement of engineering practices across Optus IT. This role leads the Software Engineering Centre of Excellence (CoE), ensuring the establishment and evolution of best-in-class engineering standards, platforms, and communities. The VP is a champion for the professional growth and development of software engineers, fostering a culture of innovation, learning, and technical mastery that underpins Optus’ digital transformation.  The function will also manage a number of key enablement platforms to support the delivery teams. 

What You’ll Do

Partnering closely with the CIO and senior leadership team, as well as multiple senior internal stakeholders across Optus, you will be responsible for:

 

  • Leading the Software Engineering Centre of Excellence (CoE), bolstering the CoE as the hub for engineering best practices, technical standards, and innovation. You will own and evolve DevSecOps platforms and tools to drive operational excellence and support secure, scalable, and efficient software delivery.
  • Driving the adoption of modern engineering methodologies, tools, and frameworks across all teams including our external partners
  • Lead the technical Line 2 assurance function to continuously validate engineering controls and standards
  • Setting strategic priorities, and governing policies, standards, and controls ensuring alignment with business goals and regulatory requirements
  • Modelling Optus values and championing a culture of ongoing evolution and improvement, continuous learning, knowledge sharing, and technical excellence
  • Drive the safe and effective adoption of AI technologies to drive engineering productivity and engagement.
  • Skills Development and capability building for our Engineers, designing and implement structured development pathways for software engineers through mentoring, technical training, certification programmes, and career progression frameworks
  • Attract, develop, and retain top engineering talent in collaboration with People & Culture teams, raising the bar for hiring and promotions, using transparent and equitable mechanisms
  • Managing key enablement platforms including CI/CD & Release, Integration and API platforms

 

What You’ll Bring

  • Minimum 10 years of relevant engineering experience, 7 years in executive management
  • Proven leadership in large-scale engineering or technology transformation roles
  • Deep expertise in DevSecOps, platform engineering, and software development lifecycle
  • Demonstrated ability to build and scale engineering communities and cultures
  • Excellent stakeholder management and cross-functional collaboration skills
  • Strategic thinker with a track record of delivering measurable outcomes
  • Experience in P&L accountability and targets
